How important is diaper-free time for your Little One?

There is nothing fresh and gentle like a new-born baby. Be it the soft skin, the sleepy smiles or the unique intoxicating smell. A new-born baby’s skin is soft, sensitive and delicate. Hence, it requires special attention and constant care. So, it is extremely important to follow a diaper-free time for your little one. The diaper-free time can be anything between a couple of minutes to a few hours per day. Let’s look at some of the reasons as to why a diaper-free time is important for your little one.

  1. To allow free movement: A diaper can be soft, lightweight and comfortable for the baby to wear. But, however great it might be, it would restrict the movement of your baby to a certain extent. This is applicable for both cloth diapers and disposable diapers. So, a diaper-free time can enable a baby to have free movement of limbs or crawl or move around. This is very much essential for development of your baby’s gross motor skills.
  2. To prevent diaper rashes: Diaper rash is a common problem for babies who go long hours with diapers on. A diaper-free time of at least 5-10 minutes every time you change a diaper can be ideal.
  3. To understand baby cues better: You should practice a period of diaper-free time after your baby poops or pees. This can help you understand the baby better and in turn help in potty training. (Be ready for some cleanup though!).
  4. To allow your baby’s skin to breathe: The diapers whether disposable or cloth, allow very little or no aeration to the baby’s bottom. A diaper-free time whenever possible can help the skin breathe. This helps not only to prevent diaper rashes or infection but also for a healthier skin. (Grannies those days would expose a naked baby for a few minutes to the morning sun for Vitamin D and to prevent infections.)

Disposable Diapers:
A disposable diaper can be convenient for use when you have sleepless nights taking care of your new-born baby. But, a disposable diaper has chemicals that convert the liquid into a gel like substance preventing leakage and mess. These chemicals are harmful for the skin of your baby as well as the environment. As much as they are convenient, it is ideal to not to use them all the time. Please ensure that you change them a little before they are completely full or every 2-3 hours. The amount of waste generated by disposable diapers also is a serious environmental concern. The recurring cost of spending for diapers is definitely a matter of thought for new parents.

Cloth Diapers:
A cloth diaper eliminates two major disadvantages associated with disposable diapers - waste generation for the environment and huge monthly expenses for the new parent. Also, a cloth diaper is relatively a better option since it does not have chemicals that convert liquid into gel, but they have what is called the microfiber. All companies that claim that their diapers are made of Organic Cotton have a layer of microfiber which is the layer that comes in contact with the baby's skin. The microfiber has the capacity to absorb any liquid that it comes in contact with. The scary part of this microfiber in these diapers is that it not only absorbs moisture from urine or poop, but also from the delicate skin of your baby wearing the diaper. Nobody really knows or understands the long-term effects of this microfiber on babies using these diapers.

As a new parent, it can be really confusing and daunting to choose what is right for your little one. Many a time, what is ideal may not be feasible or convenient. Also, what is convenient may not be the right choice. So, you should always make an informed choice and strike a balance between what is right for your baby and what is convenient for you.
